Miss R M Harries [Head of Faculty]
The French department at Afon Tâf consists of two enthusiastic teachers who strive to pass on their love and passion for the language. We also offer Spanish to our feeder Primary Schools as part of our very successful Project Aspire, something which we would like to see in Key Stage 3 and 4 in the future.
The French department pride themselves on fantastic GCSE results consistently being achieved by pupils in Key Stage 4, with 100% of pupils in the last 3 years opting for French GCSE achieving a C or above. This has been achieved year on year thanks to the positive attitude our pupils show towards the subjects, and the hard work and dedication of the staff. Our engaging and challenging lessons ensure that our learners leave Afon Tâf equipped with the language skills needed to progress into the world of work and broaden their horizons when looking for future careers / higher education.
We believe that pupils should be given the opportunity to use their language skills in a real-life setting, and as a result, we offer extra-curricular activities and trips to reinforce classroom learning. We run a wide variety of day excursions and residential trips, from a Languages Day in the Cardiff City Stadium, to annual trips to France at Christmas time for our pupils who wish to take French as an option. We have a very strong link with Cardiff University to ensure our pupils have high aspirations and become familiar with Higher Education from a young age.
Pupils study National Curriculum at Key Stage 3 and then WJEC GCSE qualifications at Key Stage 4.
